The 12 February presidential elections in Turkmenistan on Sunday were held in accordance with international standards and at high voter turnout, Turkmen Dovlat Xabarlari (TDX) news agency reported on Monday.

The "high level of organization of the election campaign, which took place in strict accordance with the applicable laws in the country and international law", was marked in the capital and in all five provinces (regions) of Turkmenistan.

The article also states that "this fact is fully confirmed by national observers who monitored the electoral process in the field."

Thus, 2,987,324 people voted in the polls. Eight candidates competed at the presidential elections.

According to the Central Commission for Elections and National Referendums (CEC) in Turkmenistan, yesterday by 10:00, 22.8 percent of the total electorate voted, and by noon, this figure exceeded 47 percent.

By 14:00, 68 percent of all registered voters expressed their constitutional right to freedom of expression, and by 20:00, that is, by the time the polls closed, 96.28 percent of voters voted.

"The National elections of the President of Turkmenistan are an accomplished fact. The final results of the votes will be announced in the coming days, but now it can be claimed that they were truly democratic, becoming an important milestone in the modern history of independent Turkmen state," TDX reported.
