Ashgabat hosting a two-day regional workshop with the participation of the United Nations, dedicated to the coordination of international efforts to combat drug trafficking, state information agency Turkmen Dovlet Khabarlary said today.

The delegations from Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Turkey, US, as well as representatives of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Turkmen relevant ministries and departments attend the forum.

The participants discuss the issues of staff training, working out the educational national programs.

UNODC regional program coordinator Miwa Kato attends the forum.

The development of a regional program aimed at assisting Afghanistan and neighboring countries to combat illicit trafficking of opiates and chemicals - precursors are among the most important measures taken by UNODC.

One of the most effective formats in this direction was the interaction within the Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Centre for combating illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors - CARICC.

The work in being conducted within the European Union's Border Management Programme in Central Asia (BOMCA) and the EU Drug Action in Central Asia (CADAP).

Turkmenistan has a long border with Afghanistan. The next action is for the destruction of large quantities of drugs seized during special operations that took place at the area of Kasamly Julge near Ashgabat in December last year. More than 489 kilograms of drugs were destroyed.

Turkmenistan is a participant of three international conventions on combating illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, adopted by the UN in 1961, 1971 and 1988.
