Turkmenistan, Afghanistan discuss management of trans-boundary water resources

Turkmenistan and Afghanistan discussed the implementation of previously reached agreements concerning the joint management of trans-boundary water resources and the prospects for the further cooperation in this area, the Turkmen government said on Friday.

Turkmenistan and Afghanistan discussed the implementation of previously reached agreements concerning the joint management of trans-boundary water resources and the prospects for the further cooperation in this area, the Turkmen government said on Friday.

A delegation of the Energy and Water Resources Ministry of Afghanistan arrived in Ashgabat.

"Meeting participants stressed the importance of coordinated approaches towards the efficient joint use of trans-boundary watercourses and their management based on international law and called for further cooperation in this area," the report says.

Also, the discussions touched upon the importance of water resources, given the interests of regional powers and with the participation of international organizations such as the UN.

The government report says that Turkmenistan pursues a policy of efficient use of water resources, there is the work on the implementation of environmental protection, water cleansing and water-saving technologies based on the latest achievements of science.

Turkmenistan has a long border with Afghanistan; the trans-boundary rivers are the Murghab and Tejen (Hari River in Afghan language.
