Turkmen parliament to consider new draft laws

The eighteenth session of the Turkmen Majlis (Parliament) of the fourth convocation will be held on March 2, 2013 and discussion on a legislation package is on the agenda, an official Turkmen source said on Thursday.

According to the country's Constitution this year, the deputies of the Majlis of the fourth convocation will complete their work. Some 17 Majlis sessions were held with a total of 373 documents adopted during this time, including 192 laws and 181 decrees. Amongst these documents are 28 decrees on Turkmenistan's ratification of international agreements or accession to those treaties.

Majlis chairman Akja Nurberdieva spoke on the current activities of the parliament at a recent government meeting.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that further activation of parliament's work is necessary aimed at improving the welfare of the Turkmen people, strengthening of civil institutions and approving democratic principles in society

The parliament was elected in December 2008 with a five year term.

According to the Turkmen constitution, parliament passes laws, makes changes and additions to the Constitution of Turkmenistan; examines the state budget approval and addresses questions on holding referendums.

It also announces presidential and parliamentary elections, considers issues on appointment and dismissal of the chief of Supreme Court, attorney general, interior minister and minister of justice. It also ratifies and terminates international treaties and addresses issues on change of state borders and the administrative and territorial division of Turkmenistan.
