The XV meeting of the Energy Sector Coordination Committee (ESCC) of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) is being held in the capital of Turkmenistan, state information agency Turkmen dovlet khabarlary said on Friday.
According to the report, the participants are discussing issues over the development of the Central Asian and South Asian energy corridor, solving the problem of supervisory control and power trade and reforms in the energy sector within the framework of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Representatives of the participating countries of the CAREC programme which are Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Mongolia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the World Bank (WB), the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are participating at the meeting.
Turkmenistan is holding this forum for the first time since its accession to CAREC in 2010. The programme is formed on the initiative of the ADB jointly with UNDP, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development EBRD) and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).
The main goal of this programme is to assist the implementation of investment projects in the areas of transport, trade and energy, aimed at the acceleration of socio-economic development of the Central Asian region.
It should be noted that the UN General Assembly resolution 'Reliable and stable transit of energy and its role in the sustainable development and international cooperation' has been recently adopted on the initiative of Turkmenistan.
This document became a starting point for the formation of an international legal basis of safe transit of energy resources designed to provide optimum conditions for the development of a constructive partnership based on the interests of all participating sides, producers, transit countries and consumers.
'During the meeting, the participants expressed their confidence that the results will contribute to the development of optimal forms of cooperation and activation of effective cooperation within the framework of CAREC', the statement said.
