Turkmenistan was elected the vice-chairman of the 68th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations with the unanimous support of the 193 UN member states, the Turkmen government said on Tuesday.
According to the report, the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov "congratulated the Turkmen people with the good news that had come from New York (USA), where the headquarters of the United Nations is located".
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a briefing where a spokesperson pointed out that the expansion and intensification of partnership with the United Nations and its subdivisions is considered by Turkmenistan as being one of the priority vectors of Turkmen diplomacy and a pillar of the 'Concept of foreign policy of Turkmenistan for 2013-2017'.
Previously, Turkmenistan was elected vice chairman of the 62nd and 64th sessions of the UN General Assembly in 2007 and 2009.
The report notes that Turkmenistan is consistent in its cooperation with the UN in the energy, environmental, water and other aspects of security on a systematic basis.
The briefing has also paid great attention to the development of initiatives in the energy sector of Turkmenistan in the context of the formation of an international legal mechanism for the safe transit of energy resources.
As is known, on May 17 of this year, the General Assembly adopted a resolution initiated by Turkmenistan on 'Reliable and stable transit of energy and its role in sustainable development and international cooperation'.
