Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, September 26/ Trend, H. Hasanov /

Turkmenistan considers it reasonable to create a new cooperation mechanism using international ecological dialogue on the Caspian Sea under the auspices of the UN. This is in order to consolidate efforts of the Caspian Sea countries in the sphere of environmental protection, Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported.

The article was dedicated to a three-day meeting (September 25-27) of representatives of the Caspian Sea countries held in Ashgabat

'"Participants expressed satisfaction with the coherency of the work carried out on discussions of the draft agreement on cooperation in the field of prevention of emergency situations of a natural and man-made character and elimination of their consequences in the Caspian Sea and coastal areas', the article said.

Turkmen State News Service Turkmen Dovlet Khabarlary (TDH) said that Turkmenistan as a major producer and exporter of hydrocarbons, believes environmental security is a key issue.

This is an important condition for international consensus in energy security issues.

"This is especially topical given that the Caspian Sea region precipitously turns into one of the largest world centres for production and transportation of hydrocarbons. Therefore the task of combining objective economic interests, the realities of international cooperation in the energy sphere with the need to preserve the biodiversity of the Caspian Sea and to prevent upsetting the existing ecological balance is of special importance today, "TDH commented.

Turkmenistan has adopted its national action plan on the Caspian Sea which envisages measures aimed at preventing pollution of the environment by industrial facilities, preserving the biodiversity of the Caspian Sea, rational use and reproduction of its biological resources.
