Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Dec.11
By Huseyn Hasanov - Trend:

According to a decree issued by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the Regulation on Turkmen seafarer's identity document was approved.

The State Service of Maritime and River Transport of Turkmenistan will issue new documents by January 1, 2015.

This document with the introduction of biometric data offers a high degree of protection, and is to be given to seafarers serving on any ship other than warships.

The identity document has been designed to meet international standards "in order to further strengthen friendly relations between Turkmenistan and foreign countries, establish free navigation of Turkmen seafarers in other countries and protect their rights."

At a recent government meeting Berdimuhamedov stressed the dynamic development of the Navy through the acquisition of new specialized ships. These will significantly expand operations of the State Service of Maritime and River Transport.

Turkmenistan on the Caspian Sea borders Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Iran. In recent years regional transport projects have been intensified there.

Turkish Gap Insaat is building a modern seaport in Turkmenbashi on the Caspian Sea to be operational in 2017. Its infrastructure includes construction of shipbuilding and ship repairing plants. The total project cost is estimated at $ 2 billion.

Modernized large vessels of Turkmen merchant navy are actively involved in freight cargo transportation in the Caspian Sea, servicing international routes from the Turkmenbashi port to the ports of the Caspian countries, expanding the geography and variety of transported goods.
