By Huseyn Hasanov - Trend:

A draft document on management of water resources is being developed in Turkmenistan with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), according to a message from the Turkmen government.

Mark Chao, the technical advisor to energy-efficiency projects of the UNDP, has visited Ashgabat to this end.

Turkmen Foreign Ministry hosted a meeting, which discussed joint work on development of the draft document 'Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources for Sustainable Water Management in Turkmenistan', according to the message.

The meeting, which was attended by the country's ministers and heads of local institutions, discussed cooperation prospects between Turkmenistan and the UNDP.

In 2012 Turkmenistan joined the UN Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes, dated March 17, 1992.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) welcomed this decision of Turkmenistan's parliament, saying that this is an important step towards strengthening transboundary water cooperation and integrated water resources management.

This agreement is very important for the country, the territory of which is mainly covered by deserts.

Turkmenistan borders with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Afghanistan, and uses water resources from four transboundary rivers in line with the quota. These rivers are the Amu Darya, Tedzhen, Atrek and Murghab.

Nearly 90 percent of the total water flow to Turkmenistan accounts for Amudarya River.
