President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received the Honorary Consul of Turkmenistan in Belgium, Koen Minne, who during the meeting expressed an interest of Belgian companies in expanding their presence in the local market, the Turkmen TV channel Altyn Asyr reported on Feb. 21.

"Minne expressed interest of Belgium political and business circles in the establishment of full-scale cooperation meeting mutual interests with the rapidly developing Turkmenistan and expanding its presence in the promising Turkmen market," the statement said.

Industrialisation and electrification projects and in particular the construction of a high electricity infrastructure were presented to this end.

The TV station also reported that Berdimuhamedov praised the many years of work experience with Belgian partners, noting that Turkmenistan is willing to consider new proposals.

"During the meeting, the President and the Honorary Consul of Turkmenistan in Belgium discussed opportunities to strengthen business partnerships based on an existing large resource potential and growing interest on the part of the European Union Member States," the report said.

Ashgabat and Brussels have intensified economic relations in recent years. The Belgian ENEX Process Engineering SA opened its official representation in Ashgabat where it cooperates in the processing and chemical industries and in telecommunications, as well as in the implementation of environmentally friendly energy saving technology.

Enex as part of a consortium with the French Schneider Electric company, signed an agreement with the Government of Turkmenistan on energy supply in the Turkmen capital in 2010.

The objective of this project is to improve the quality and reliability of the power supply system and response to energy consumption growth as a result of dynamic development in Ashgabat.

Implementation of the project accounted for the period until 2017.
