Anti-corruption law enters into force in Turkmenistan

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, March 12

By Huseyn Hasanov- Trend:

The law 'On combating corruption' has entered into force in Turkmenistan, a message from the government of Turkmenistan said.

The law `sets out the basic principles of combating corruption, the legal and organizational framework for combating it, its prevention, elimination of the causes and conditions that contribute to the commission of offenses related to corruption, and elimination of its consequences.

One of the law's articles says that depending on the nature of work and conditions of its performance, there can be imposed prohibitions, restrictions and obligations to certain categories of civil servants, as well as to entrepreneurial activity personally or by proxy.

The same categories of civil servants in Turkmenistan are prohibited to open accounts in foreign banks, except for the cases stipulated by the legislation of the country.

In one of his speeches, Turkmen President, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that the negative impact of corruption will be eradicated in Turkmenistan.

International financial institutions also pay attention to the corruption problems in Turkmenistan. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in December that the stimulation of the private entrepreneurship's growth in Turkmenistan requires improving the entrepreneurial environment and reducing the opportunities for corruption.

IMF experts believe that the privatization program in Turkmenistan should be implemented on the basis of consultations with international financial organizations.

Turkmenistan holds a key position in the region for the supply of natural gas imported by China, Russia and Iran.

The strategic sectors of the economy, including the fuel and energy complex, remain under the control of the state, while in other sectors of the economy, Turkmenistan is focused on the transition to a market economy.
