Myrat Mammetaliyev has been appointed Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Turkmenistan to South Korea, according to the country's President, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov's decree.

The decision on opening embassy in South Korea was adopted in summer of 2013.

"This will be an important event in the history of fruitful bilateral relations, which have reached a qualitatively new level and significantly improved in recent years," Turkmen president earlier said at a government meeting.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in February 1992.

South Korean embassy in Turkmenistan was opened in January 2007. The state visit of Turkmenistan's president to Seoul in November 2008 gave impetus to the interstate dialogue.

Several large South Korean companies successfully operate in Turkmenistan. In particular, LG International and Hundai Engineering Co.LTD got large projects in the oil and gas sector in Turkmenistan.

The companies are implementing a project worth $534 million at Turkmenbashi refinery. It should be completed in May 2015. In September 2013 LG International and Hundai Engineering Co.LTD also completed service work worth $ 1.2 billion for the development of Galkynysh hydrocarbon field which has the largest natural gas reserves in the country.
