Turkey’s president-elect invited to visit Turkmenistan

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who won the Aug. 10 presidential election, had a phone conversation.

During the conversation, Berdimuhamedov invited Erdogan to visit Turkmenistan, according to a message from the Turkmen government.

"The Turkmen president's invitation was accepted with gratitude. The dates of the visit will be worked out through diplomatic channels," Turkmen government said.

The parties highly appreciated the two countries' interstate dialogue, which is built upon constructive, equal and mutually beneficial basis, according to the message.

During the conversation Berdimuhamedov and Erdogan also discussed the priority issues of cooperation, the development of which receives great importance from both countries. Aside from that, attention was paid to the progress of a number of major projects undertaken by Turkish companies in Turkmenistan.

"Exchanging views on the prospects for further developing the productive Turkmen-Turkish cooperation in priority areas, which include trade and economy, energy, transportation and communications sectors, a number of other industries, the Turkmen president and Turkey's newly elected president pointed out the existence of good opportunities to realize new joint projects in various areas," according to the message.

Turkey is one of the largest trade and economic partners of Turkmenistan. More than 600 Turkish companies are operating in the Turkmen market.

In 2013, the foreign trade turnover between the two countries stood at about $4.746 billion, or 38 percent higher than in the same period of last year.

Turkey held the presidential election on Aug. 10. The election was won by the current PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who gained 51.8 percent of the vote.

The former head of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu came in second with 38.56 percent of the vote, while the third place went to the People's Democracy Party's (HDP) Head Salahaddin Demirtas, who gained 9.79 percent of the vote.

The authority of the current President of Turkey Abdullah Gul will expire on August 28.
