Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov met with Iran's Vice President for Science and Technology Affairs Sorena Sattari, and mulled topical issues of interstate cooperation, Turkmen government said Aug. 21.

"The guest conveyed sincere greetings from Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who expressed a strong interest of the Iranian side in the continuing development of the existing productive interstate dialogue," according to a message from the Turkmen government.

The Turkmen president, expressing response wishes, noted that his country pays special attention to an active involvement of foreign business representatives in the Turkmen market, including the leading companies from Iran.

Turkmenistan and Iran have borders on the Caspian Sea, and also have an extended land border. During the years of long-term cooperation the two countries realized a number of major projects.

As the two parties say, the most important project is the Korpeje-Kurt-Kui gas pipeline, commissioned in 1996, and the Dovletabat-Sarahs-Hangeran pipeline commissioned recently as an addition to the Korpeje-Kurt-Kui.

Iran imports Turkmen electricity.

The two states have also built a border dam called Friendship (Dostluk). At this stage the North-South railway project is being implemented on the basis of a trilateral agreement signed in 2007 by Turkmenistan, Iran and Kazakhstan.

According to the Iranian side, the annual volume of bilateral trade between the two neighboring countries stands at about $5 billion and can double in the years to come.
