Atamyrat Atayev was appointed Deputy Minister of Textile Industry of Turkmenistan, according to the president's decree published Sept. 1.

Earlier Geldimyrat Orazmyradov held this position. He was dismissed in connection with his transfer to another position.

Cotton is traditionally grown in Turkmenistan. Cotton is the basis for the development of the textile industry. Its annual turnover is about $400 million.

As of 2013 this sphere is presented by 74 enterprises, namely, 32 textile complexes, cotton spinning and weaving mills, 17 garment factories, seven silk enterprises, two wool processing companies, three knitting companies and others.

During the years of independence dozens of textile companies, totaling more than $1.6 billion were built. This increased the volume of domestically processed cotton up to 51 percent.

It is mainly supplied to the U.S, Canada, Germany, England, Russia, Italy, Turkey, China, Ukraine. Such companies as Puma, Bershka, Nautika, Sara Lee, Casual Wear, Wal-Mart, Miss Erica, Vespolino, JC Penney and others are among the customers of goods.

Turkmenistan's facilities can produce up to 177,000 tons of various yarn, 186 million square meters of various fabrics, 11,000 tons of various knitted fabrics, 7,200 of terry fabrics and 80 million pieces of knitwear and garments a year.
