Uzbekistan, Tashkent, June 26 / Trend D. Azizov /

Employees at the National Security Service of Uzbekistan jointly with other law enforcement officers on Tuesday and in the presence of members of the State Commission for Drug Control, the representatives of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the public and the media destroyed 1.65 tons of drugs seized during the fight against drug trafficking.

In total, 499 kilogrammes of heroin, 597 kg of opium, 240 kilogrammes of marijuana, 302 kilogrammes of hashish, as well as a large number of cannabis and psychotropic drugs in the form of tablets and solutions were burned at the Tashkent factory.

In accordance with previous drug seizures in the country, those which served as evidence in court, after drug dealing convictions and sentencing were completed are burned in special furnaces by the State Commission for Drug Control. According to the data from the National Security Council, since 1994 Uzbekistan has destroyed 48.211 tons of drugs.

According to the National Information and Analytical Centre on Drug Control under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic, the country seized 5.404 tons from illegal trafficking compared to 4.717 tons of drugs in 2010, including 622.2 kg of heroin, 984 kg of opium, 3.018 tons of marijuana and 367 kilogrammes of hashish.

Over the past year, the country identified 8171 crimes connected with drug trafficking compared to 8854 the previous year. At the same time 107 foreign nationals have been detained for drug crimes in Uzbekistan.

Currently, the dispensary in the country has 18,197 drug addicts compared to 18,939 in 2010.

According to international experts, 93 per cent of global opium production is of Afghan origin. This has a negative effect on the drug situation in Central Asia and in particular in Uzbekistan. Afghan opium and heroin get into Uzbekistan, mainly through Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and directly from Afghanistan along the river Amu Darya.

Last time such an action for the destruction of drugs was carried out was in Uzbekistan in June last year. Nearly 700 kilogrammes of drugs were then destroyed.
