Measures against desertification to be discussed in Uzbekistan

Measures related to combating desertification and land degradation as well as improving the condition of land and water conservation will be discussed during the visit of the executive secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Luc Gnacadja to Uzbekistan in late April, a source in government circles told Trend on Tuesday.

Measures related to combating desertification and land degradation as well as improving the condition of land and water conservation will be discussed during the visit of the executive secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Luc Gnacadja to Uzbekistan in late April, a source in government circles told Trend on Tuesday.

According to the source, during the visit of the United Nations representative, it is planned to hold talks with the participation of senior officials of Uzgidromet, Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, Reclamation Fund and Goskomgeodezkadastr.

Luc Gnacadja will meet in Samarkand with members of the Uzbek Research Institute of Karakul Sheep Breeding and Desert Ecology to discuss pasture management.

The UNCCD came into force in 1996 and has been ratified by 195 countries.

Uzbekistan, where the share of deserts and semi-deserts account for over 80 per cent of the land and the proportion of the population living in areas prone to drought exceeds 76 per cent, ratified the convention as one of the first in October 1995.
