Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan sign agreement on strategic partnership

Uzbek President Islam Karimov and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed an agreement which launched a strategic partnership between the two countries today, a Trend correspondent reported at the signing ceremony today.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed an agreement which launched a strategic partnership between the two countries today, a Trend correspondent reported at the signing ceremony today.

The agreement was signed during the Kazakh President's recent official visit to Uzbekistan.

The agreement sets out basic principles and priority areas of cooperation in political, trade-economic, transport and communication, water and energy, environmental, cultural-humanitarian and military-technical areas as well as in other fields.

The agreement sets out the obligation of each party to refrain from using force or a threat of force in inter-state relations, not to enter into military alliances or participate in any groups of countries, not to take any actions, including the conclusion of agreements with third countries that are prejudicial to the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the other party.

The agreement also confirms a single coordinated position regarding the development of a clean water management system in Central Asia, which will resolve all issues in the water and energy sector, including the construction of new hydro-technical structures on the trans-boundary rivers in accordance with international law and taking into account the interests of all countries in the region.
