Uzbekistan, Russia discuss inter-parliamentary relations

By Demir Azizov - Trend: Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan (upper house of parliament) Ilgizar Sobirov and Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly (upper house of parliament) of Russia Valentina Matvienko, who arrived on the eve of a two-day official visit to Tashkent, discussed ways to enhance dialogue between the legislative bodies of the two countries and prospects for Uzbek -Russian cooperation in general, according to the National Information Agency of Uzbekistan (UzA).

According to the report, the meeting noted that relations between Uzbekistan and Russia along with many areas have been developing in the parliamentary field as well. Regular meetings at the highest level contribute to the further development of cooperation in the socio-political, trade, economic, investment, scientific-technical and humanitarian spheres.

At the same time, according to Matvienko, inter-parliamentary relations lag behind the level of dialogue between the heads of the states.

"The main purpose of the visit is to create conditions for a more active development of inter-parliamentary cooperation, permanent dialogue between leaders of the Senate, the relevant committees and friendship groups," she said.

According to the Chairman of the Senate of Uzbekistan, the intensification of the dialogue between the parliaments of the two countries will make a significant contribution towards the development of relations between Russia and Uzbekistan.

Sobirov said that today's realities require more effective interaction and exchange of experience in all areas from parliamentarians in bilateral cooperation.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Chairman of the Senate and heads of the Committees of the upper house of the Uzbek parliament.

The Russian delegation includes Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Ilyas Umakhanov and First Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Vladimir Jabarov.
