UN Commission to prepare review of habitation and land use in Uzbekistan

The Uzbek government, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and the United Nations Development Program signed a memorandum of understanding, which became the foundation for further cooperation in preparing the national review on habitation and land use in Uzbekistan.

As the representative of the Uzbek Economy Ministry told Trend, the memorandum was signed during the UNECE expert mission`s visit led by Head of Housing and Land Management Unit of the UNECE, Gulnara Roll.

"The representatives of the commission discussed the main aspects of the prepared review with experts of the relevant ministries and agencies last week," the ministry reported.

The UNDP representative office will provide technical and financial assistance to the preparation of the review for Uzbekistan, and the World Bank will provide consulting assistance in developing recommendations to improve certain procedures in land use.

The preparation of a review initiated by the UNECE as a demonstration of the successful experience of Uzbekistan in this direction, as well as in support of the reforms of the housing sector.

Uzbekistan has been implementing a program of individual house construction on standard projects in rural areas since 2009. In the last five years, over 33,500 individual houses with total area of 4.5 million square meters were constructed in 159 rural areas.

At the same time, Uzbekistan constructed 750 km of roads, more than 1,600 km of water supply network, 1,200 km of electricity and gas supply networks, over 800 objects of social, production and market infrastructure in the new residential areas.

The UNECE was established in 1947, and acquired the status of a permanent member of the organization in 1951. Some 56 countries are the member of the organization. Uzbekistan has been a member of the UNECE since 1993.

The UNECE has carried out the development of national reviews on Housing and Land use since 1996. These documents present the analysis of housing, urban development and land resource management, as well as recommendations on the improvement of the legislation in the sphere of housing and land use.
