Iran to expand economic cooperation with India: Iranian official

Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov. 17 / Trend News T.Jafarov /

Iran is looking to expand cooperation with Asia, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said today.

Tehran intends to expand cooperation with India in an effort to resolve regional and economic problems. Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki is  on a visit to New Delhi to forge ties with the country, Mehmanparast told Trend News.

According to the official, Asia's role in world politics and business is increasing.

Mottaki arrived to Delhi yesterday on a two-day visit.

"Iran-India cooperation has reached a new level," Mottaki told the Irna news agency.

The official met with India's foreign minister and prime minister.

According to Mottaki, India has not abandoned the idea of the Sulh pipeline.

Soon Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will visit Iran. During the visit, the sides will sign several economic agreements, Mehmanparast said. He did not specify the fields in which the nations will cooperate, but Iran is seeking to attract Chinese and Indian companies to the South Pars gas project according to the Mehr news agency.

South Pars is Iran's largest gas field and half the country's gas reserves are located therein. For over a decade, Iran has tried to develop a gas-transportation system from the field via the Sulh gas pipeline to Pakistan and India. However, Delhi have made no concrete decisions on the issue.

Mottaki's last visit to India was three years ago.
