Iran to reduce cooperation with IAEA: Iranian official (UPDATED)

EDITOR's NOTE: Details were added after the second paragraph

Iran will reduce cooperation with the IAEA based on the Iranian parliament's demands, Iranian Atomic Energy Organization head Ali Akbar Salehi was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency.

He said IAEA-Iran cooperation will be implemented under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

According to Paragraph 3.1 of the NPT, the country should inform the IAEA about the plant six months before the activation of centrifuges.

Tehran announced Nov. 29 it is building five new plants to enrich uranium in the highlands and plans to build five similar facilities. According to Salehi, the capacity of new facilities will be the same as the plant's capacity in Natanz and will comprise 54,000 centrifuges.

The Iranian Organization for Nuclear Energy informed the IAEA about the construction of the Fordo Plant in the Gum city Sept. 25.

"Iran will provide more information on the new nuclear facilities in accordance with the terms of the NPT, that is, for the six months prior to their establishment," he added.

He said the project on Iran's prospects over the next 20 years notes that Iran must generate 20,000 megawatts of electricity during that period. The project received parliamentary approval.
