Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tuesday that Iran might release three detained US hikers in exchange for Iranian prisoners in the United States, dpa reported.
He said in an interview with state television that some negotiations had been held to exchange the three US hikers with Iranians jailed in the US for, according to Ahmadinejad, no clear charges.
Ahmadinejad did not say whether the negotiations were directly held with US officials or through mediators.
Three US hikers were detained in July by Iran when they strayed across the border from Iraq's Kurdish region. They have been held in Tehran's notorious Evin prison.
As Iran is celebrating the 31st anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution and as the Iranian administration usually avails itself of this occasion to pardon prisoners, the there Americans might also be included in this year's mercy list.
