The head of Russian nuclear energy company Rosatom assured Thursday that the upcoming delivery of nuclear fuel rods to Iran's Bushehr plant will be strictly supervised by the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA.
Rosatom boss Sergei Kiriyenko made the comment in talks with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, two days before the scheduled delivery of the Russian fuel rods to the Iranian facility on the Persian Gulf, DPA reported.
Construction of the plant was initially begun in the 1970s by a German company, then interrupted after the Islamic revolution and now about to be completed using Russian-delivered light-water technology.
The project at Bushehr illustrated that Iran, by respecting international law, also had a right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, Kiriyenko said. The is in line with international law.
He said the Bushehr plant did not violate the sanctions against Iran agreed on by the UN Security Council over Iran's other nuclear activities, amid Western suspicions that Tehran is pursuing development of nuclear weapons.
