Iranian official criticizes latest IAEA report

The latest IAEA report on Iran's nuclear program reaffirms that it is being carried out for peaceful purposes, the head of the Nuclear Energy Organization of Iran, Ali Akbar Salehi, said.

"Like previous reports [by IAEA], the new report confirms the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program, so we believe that other issues mentioned in the report are insignificant," he said.

Regarding IAEA claims that Iran's refusal to allow its inspectors into a heavy water production plant in Arako, Salehi said that such inspections are beyond the Guarantee Agreement between Iran and the Agency.

"The IAEA should tell us upon which paragraph of mutual agreement it can inspect the facilities for heavy water production. We did not find such a provision," said Salehi, adding that "if they prove this, we will immediately allow the inspectors to visit the plant."

He also said that there was no legal basis upon which Iran is obliged to provide information to the IAEA regarding its decision to begin construction of 10 new facilities for uranium enrichment.
