Iran: Internet not just spying tool but spy itself

The internet isn't a tool used for spying, it's the spy itself, Fars news agency quoted an official of Iran's information ministry as saying.

Smartphones, which are becoming more and more popular, have helped the internet extend its reach on a daily basis and can track an individual with global positioning systems.

The Stuxnet virus which infected 16,000 computers and was able to enter Iran's computer systems because of carelessness, is an example of the threat the internet poses.

One of the problems with the sanctions imposed on Iran is the difficulty in updating anti-malware protections, so Iran is working on designing these programs domestically.

Iran announced it had detected and thwarted a cyber-attack by the Stuxnet worm, which was supposedly created to infect Iranian industrial and nuclear computer systems in 2010.
