Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad underlined the necessity of devising proper plans to utilize the cyberspace for the country's progress, Fars News Agency reported.

Speaking during the first meeting of the Supreme Council of Cyberspace, President Ahmadinejad described the cyberspace as a space with no boundaries and underlined the imperative of devising accurate plans to regulate the usage of the cyberspace in line with the objectives and progress of Iran's Islamic establishment.

He also pointed to the high status of the cyberspace and stressed the important role it plays in the lives of individuals as well as the society at large.

Earlier this month, Iran announced plans to strengthen its cyber power by establishing a Supreme Council of Cyberspace to defend the country against cyber attacks.

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei tasked Iranian President with the duty of establishing a Supreme Council of Cyberspace.

In a decree, the Leader enumerated the important impact of the Internet on individual and social life, the necessity of planning to prevent the damages inflicted by it and using opportunities to provide people with useful services as reasons necessitating the establishment of the Supreme Council of Cyberspace.

The council will establish the National Center for Cyberspace that will allow gaining complete knowledge about the activities in cyberspace on domestic and international scales and deciding how the country must address arising issues.

The Supreme Council of Cyberspace, headed by Ahmadinejad, will comprise of high-ranking Iranian officials such as the Parliament Speaker, Judiciary chief, Head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, and ministers of Communication and Information Technology, Culture and Islamic Guidance and Intelligence.
