Today, Iran celebrates the Islamic Republic Day, Iranian media reported.

After a two-day nationwide referendum held on 30 and 31 March 1979, 98.2% of Iranians favored the change of political system in the country.

As a result, on April 1, 1979 Iran was declared an Islamic republic, and was given a new official name - the Islamic Republic of Iran.

This event was preceded by the Islamic revolution, which resulted in the overthrow of the last Shah of Iran - Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in February of 1979.

In a special statement of the Supervisory Board of the country said that the event was "crucial for Iran and around the world, it opened a new chapter in the history of our country and in the history of Islam."

According to Iranian calendar, the Islamic Republic day in the country is celebrated on Farvardin 12 (March 30 - March 31).

Farvardin is the first month of the Iranian calendar. Farvardin has 31 days and in 75 years of 100 years begins on 21 March and ends on 20 April. In 25 years, Farvardin begins on 19 or 22 March and ends on 18 or 21 April. Farvardin is the first month of spring, and is followed by Ordibehesht.

Today Islamic Republic of Iran celebrates the 32 anniversary. On this festive day massive celebrations are held across the country.
