Iranian families, living in urban areas, with less than 9.46 million rials (some $770) per month income are below the poverty line, head of the competition council Jamshid Pajouyan said.

He added that the first phase of the subsidy reform plan has been positive in raising incomes of families and has promoted the equitable distribution of wealth in the society, the ISNA News Agency reported.

The poverty line for families in rural areas is 5.8 million rials income (some $470), he noted.

The subsidy reform plan, which was launched in December 2010, allows the Iranian government to gradually slash subsidies on fuel, electricity, and certain goods over the course of five years, with low-income families being compensated with direct cash handouts.
