Canada has closed its embassy in Iran and is expelling all Iranian diplomats from Canada, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said Friday in a statement, reported dpa.
It was not clear what exactly prompted the sudden move though Baird said that the Iranian regime had shown "blatant disregard" for the Vienna convention and its guarantee of protection for diplomatic personnel.
In the statement posted on the Foreign Ministry's website, Baird also cited Iran's military assistance for the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and defiance of UN resolutions that it must come clean about its nuclear programme.
