Georgia's aspiration for the EU is the best way for the country's future, European Parliamentary President Martin Schulz said in an interview with the Imedi TV company today.
So, he responded to the position of "Georgian Dream" in connection with the restoration of the relations with Russia.
Schultz said that the improvement of relations between Georgia and Russia must be always welcomed.
"Improving the relations with Russia is good, but on the other hand, Georgia's aspiration for the EU and the development of the public in terms of European values, is the best way for Georgia's future," he added.
Schultz said that the peaceful change of power in Georgia is a very good sign and proof of democracy.
He added that this fact confirmed that there is a democracy in the country. The EU welcomes this.
"We are closely following the events," he said. "It is obvious that the country is very close to the EU," he said. "There is also your country's goal to become an EU member. It was shared by all political forces. We are happy with holding the free and fair elections. We will follow the activity of the new government of "Georgian Dream" because this force does not consist of one party. It represents a coalition consisting of different trends. We hope that the stability required by Georgia will be created."
