Iranian police seized a huge cargo of narcotics at the Sarbaz border, southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan Province, late Friday.
The cargo was comprised of 1,672 kilograms of opium and 86 kilograms of hash, the Mehr News Agency reported.
Six drug-traffickers were killed during the police operation.
Eastern Iran borders Afghanistan, which is the world's number one opium and drug producer. Iran's geographical position has made the country a favorite transit corridor for drug traffickers who intend to smuggle their cargoes from Afghanistan to drug dealers in Europe.
Iran leads international efforts in fighting drug networks and narcotic traffickers.
The Iranian police measures along the country's eastern borders have forced drug-traffickers to resort to other routes, including the Sea of Oman and the Persian Gulf, to smuggle their drug cargos which originate in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
