Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Qassemi and Turkmen Foreign Minister Rasit Meredow in a meeting in Ashkhabad on Tuesday discussed enhancement of bilateral ties between the two countries, FNA reported.

At the meeting, the Iranian oil minister said that both states should work to further expand their bilateral relations and cooperation.

"We should try to further develop the relations and cooperation between the two friendly and brotherly countries today," Qassemi added.

Turkmen Foreign Minister Rasit Meredow, for his part, said that the relations between the two countries are based on historical commonalities.

"Both the Iranian and Turkmen leaders attach special importance to the further expansion of the broad-based ties between the two countries in line with their intimate and brotherly relations," he added.

Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Qassemi heading a high-ranking economic delegation arrived in Ashkhabad on Tuesday.

Upon arrival at Ashkhabad International Airport, Qassemi told FNA that his visit to Turkmenistan is mainly aimed at increasing the volume of gas imports from that country.

"We plan to confer with Turkmenistan's President (Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov) and also the country's energy officials during this visit to discuss increasing the volume of gas imports from Turkmenistan," Qassemi told FNA.

He further voiced satisfaction with Tehran-Ashkhabad cooperation in different areas.
