About 300 tons of drugs have been discovered, and seized in Iran, during the last year (Iranian year ends on March 20), Deputy Commander of the Iranian Police Brigadier General Ahmad-Reza Radan said, Mehr reported.
Radan noted that 77 tons of those drugs have been seized in Iran's Sistan Baluchestan province.
According to Radan, Iran's border police carried out an operation on preventing cross-border drug trafficking, and captured four trucks full of drugs.
Brigadier general said that currently there are some existing problems with South East of Iran's borders with drug trafficking, which will be solved soon.
"The border police have the North border of Sistan Baluchestan locked down, to prevent drug smuggling, and the in-depth monitoring of the Southern border of the province should be intensivied soon," Radan said.
Several days ago Sistan Baluchestan police commander Hamid Fahimirad said 3 tons of drugs and over 3 kgs of opium were confiscated in this southeastern Iranian province.
In October 2012, Deputy head of Iran's Drug Control Headquarters Taha Taheri said there are more than 100,000 prisoners in Iran, serving sentences for drug-related crimes.
Taheri said that more than 3,600 police officers were killed during the drug combat operations over the last 30 years.
According to foreign media outlets, since October 2011 to October 2012, Iran had 488 people executed, 33 percent of which were accused on drug trafficking.
