Iran's Judiciary Spokesman: competent authorities have the last word on who can participate in elections

Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 17 /Trend S.Isayev, T. Jafarov/

Iran's Judiciary Spokesman Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei said today that only competent authorities have the last word on who can participate in the presidential elections, Fars reported.

Mohseni-Ejei made the remarks, while speaking to the journalists in Ardebil.

Speaking about the opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, the judiciary spokesman said they are those "who committed atrocities against the state and the nation as well."

In 2009 Iranian Presidential election, Mir Hossein Mousavi came out of semi-retirement and ran as one of two Reformist candidates against the Administration of incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

However he failed to win the election, and following alleged vote rigging and manipulation, his campaign sparked a long protest that eventually turned into a national movement against the Government and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Mohseni-Ejei noted that both Karroubi and Mousavi certainly are not qualified to be allowed to take part in the upcoming presidential elections, yet it is up to the competent authorities to decide.

Iranians will choose their seventh president to succeed Ahmadinejad in the next year's election, which is scheduled for June 14, 2013.

The voters will select the successor of current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is not able to participate in the elections for the third straight time due to country's constitutional laws.

The main opponents at the presidential elections in Iran are reformists and conservatives.
