The number of patients with multiple sclerosis has increased in Iran. The disease has recently spread widely among teenagers and young adults, famous Iranian neurologist Mohammed Aliakbarian was quoted by Iranian news agency Asriran as saying.
According to the doctor, the disease has been recently observed among young people. Less older people become ill with multiple sclerosis.
Earlier, deputy chief of the Iranian Multiple Sclerosis Department Mohammad Ali Sahraian warned about widespread multiple sclerosis in the country. He said that the probable cause is environmental factors.
He added that women become ill with multiple sclerosis four times more often than men.
According to Iranian media, the number of multiple sclerosis patients increased in Iran.
Environmental factors are behind the wide spread nature of the disease.
At present, there are 50,000 multiple sclerosis patients in Iran.
If multiple sclerosis continues to spread so rapidly, in ten years every Iranian family will have one member with multiple sclerosis, the information said.
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease in which membranes around the brain, spinal cord and nervous system are affected.
In conversation, age related memory impairment is referred to as "sclerosis". "Multiple sclerosis" has no relation to either senile "sclerosis" or attention deficits.
The disease occurs amongst 15 - 40 year old people. At the moment, the diagnosis being is observed amongst children three years and older.
Multiple sclerosis is characterized by the simultaneous destruction of various parts of the nervous system, which leads to the appearance of neurological symptoms.
There are around two million patients with multiple sclerosis in the world.
