The leader of the Iranian opposition, ex-President Mohammad Khatami said on the eve of a meeting with journalist that he supports the candidacy of former President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani at the presidential elections, Khatami's official website baran.org.ir reported.

"Hashemi's nomination at the elections is a victory for all of us," Mohammad Khatami said.

"I was delighted when several days ago Hashemi said that if the Supreme Leader of Iran agrees, he will nominate himself for the elections," Khatam said.

On May 6, former president Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said that he will take part in the upcoming presidential election if he gets the consent of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The official registration of presidential candidates began on May 7 and will continue until May 11.

The Council for the Protection of the Constitution of Iran will examine the credentials of each candidate on May 12-16.

If for any reason the Council decides that a candidate does not have the right to participate in the presidential election, the candidate may appeal against the decision until a certain time.

Iran's Interior Ministry will unveil the candidates' names on May 23-24. The election campaign will begin on May 24 and end on June 12.

Anyone who nominates themself without the consent of the Supreme Leader will face problems, Khatami added.

Ali Younisi, who was the Security Minister during the presidency of Mohammad Khatami said that he talked to Rafsanjani and he said he would not be a candidate in the presidential election.

The 11th presidential elections in Iran will be held on June 14.
