Afghan authorities accused Iranian border forces on Saturday of shooting Afghans who were trying to cross into Iran's territory and wounding nine of them, dpa reported.

Fire was opened late Friday when 300 Afghans were crossing the western border adjoining Farah province, Abdul Rahman Zhowandai, spokesman for Farah's governor, said.

"We are currently investigating the incident. Our border police and other law enforcement forces have been dispatched to the border area to find out the cause of the incident," he said.

The nine injured were taken to the provincial hospital.

"We don't know how many people have died. We received only injured ones," he said.

Iran and Afghanistan share a 900-kilometer border. Some 2 million Afghan refugees live in Iran to get away from war and poverty at home.
