Some 330 hectares of cannabis farms destroyed in Iran’s West Azerbaijan province

Some 491 hectares of cannabis farms was destroyed during the last solar year (ended on March 21) and first quarter of current year, police commander of Iran’s West Azerbaijan province, Yahya Sharafi said, Mehr news agency reported.

Some 491 hectares of cannabis farms was destroyed during the last solar year (ended on March 21) and first quarter of current year, police commander of Iran's West Azerbaijan province, Yahya Sharafi said, Mehr news agency reported.

According to the report, some 161 hectares of cannabis farms was destroyed in last solar year and 330 hectares during the first quarter of the current solar year.

Some 23.467 tons of narcotics has been seized since March 2012, including about 1.352 tons during the first quarter of current solar year, the report added.

Sharafi expressed his concern about increasing consumption of industrial narcotics including methamphetamine in the province.

Heroin, methamphetamine and opium users amount 44, 38 percent and 14.43 percent of drug users in the province.

According to the official statistics, there are about 2 million of drug users in Iran.

It was reported that 500 tons of drugs were seized during the last solar year (ended on March 21) in the country, with 115 tons of that amount being seized during the first 3 months of the Iranian calendar.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has recently intensified its fight against drug smuggling.
