Tajik Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi said that the Islamic Republic of Iran is a strategically important partner for Tajikistan, IRNA reported.

During a press conference in Dushanbe on Wednesday, Zarifi referred to cultural, religious and langual coomonalties between Iran and Tajikistan as a base for enhancement of bilateral ties in political, economic, cultural and humanitarian areas.

Trade exchanges between the two countries reached $ 210 million in 2012, he said, adding that Iran is the third trade partner of Tajikistan after Russia and China.

He said that Tehran and Dushanbe have signed over 150 economic, cultural and trade agreements in 20 years, most of which have become operational so far.

He referred to his recent visit to Iran, where he had presented Tajik President Emomalii Rahmons message to President Ahmadinejad calling for expansion of ties.

He hailed good cooperation between the two countries during President Ahmadinejads tenure.

During his Iran visit, he said he had also met representative of Iranian president-elect hassan Rohani and his Iranian counterpart Ali-Akbar Salehi.

He said that President Rahmon had invited Hassan Rohani to attend the International Conference on Water Cooperation, which is scheduled to be held in Dushanbe in August.

The Tajik foreign minister praised massive turn-out for June 14 presidential election in Iran, saying, the poll was held transparently and democratically, so that no one could put it under question.

Commenting on Tajikistans upcoming presidential election which is to be held in November, he said that the ground is prepared for holding a successful election across the country.
