Iranian president Hassan Rouhani's priority is a softening, if not lifting of sanctions, which is a precondition for country's economic recovery, Senior fellow at Nanyang Technological University's S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, James M. Dorsey told Trend.

The expert was commenting on Iran's further steps at international arena, after Hassan Rouhani was elected as country's new president on June 14, and has established new cabinet of minister to handle domestic and foreign matters.

"Rouhani has already changed the tone of his approach. The question is how much substance he can and will change and to what extent the US will meet him part of the way," Dorsey said.

The expert went on to note that the upcoming September 27 meeting between Iran and IAEA is part of the process, and is another indication of that.

"Obviously, Rouhani's priority is a softening if not a lifting of sanctions, the precondition for economic recovery. To achieve that, he needs a nuclear deal," Dorsey said.

The U.S. and other Western states suspect Iran of developing a nuclear weapon, through its disputed nuclear program.

As a result, numerous sanctions have been imposed on Iran, in a move to make the country's curb the nuclear program.

Iran has been denying any intention to build a bomb, saying its nuclear research is only for medical purposes.
