Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, IRNA reported.
The presidents of SCO member states held the meeting in Kyrgyzstan on September 13.
Iran has an observer status in SCO.
According to the report, Rouhani and Putin discussed mutual relations as well as some international issues.
Rouhani said that, regarding the sensitive situation in the region, settlement of problems in Middle East needs consistent counselling. He said Russia has taken serious steps towards solution of regions' problem and now there are more opportunities to take much more significant role. He mentioned Russia's proposal to Syria on handing over the chemical weapons to international community's control and said that Syria's agreement with the proposal created an atmosphere which prevented military intervention in this country.
Rouhani said Iran wants to boost relations with Russia.
Iranian President also said that his country wants to resume talks on Iran's nuclear program as soon as possible within framework of Non-Proliferation Treaty.
