For the last 8 years, Iran has been on the verge of being greatly damaged, former president of Iran, Mohammad Khatami said, opposition website Kaleme reported.

Khatami made the remarks speaking to the people in Iran's city of Ardakan in Yazd province.

"If politicians are unable to solve at least the key problems in economy as soon as possible, the country will be greatly damaged," Khatami underscored.

He further spoke about the jailed opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, expressing hope that their situation would soon improve.

It should be noted that previously, another former Iranian president Hashemi Rafsanjani spoke to country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei about Karroubi and Mousavi, asking to release the opposition leaders.

Country's opposition leaders Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi are currently under home arrest in Iran, after the unrests and protests of the 2009 presidential elections in Iran.
