Oman's minister responsible for defence matters, Sayyid Badr bin Saud al Busaidi and Iranian Defence Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan signed a defence cooperation memorandum, Iranian State IRINN TV reported.

Cooperation on fighting against drug and human trafficking and boosting mutual educational and cultural ties between the two countries` armed forces are among the articles of the memorandum.

Busaidi arrived in Tehran yesterday as the first high-ranking foreign guest of the Iranian Defence Minister and was welcomed by Iran's deputy defence minister at Mehrabad International Airport.

Dehghan officially welcomed his Omani counterpart at Iran 's Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces Logistics this morning.

During his visit, the Omani minister is scheduled to meet and hold talks with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

Earlier in August on an official visit to Tehran , Omani ruler Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said exchanged views with Iranian officials on ways to improve defence cooperation.

Oman and Iran, which share control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, maintain friendly relations. Oman has mediated between Iran and the US on a number of cases including the three US citizens who were arrested in Iran in 2009 on illegal entry and espionage charges and were released during 2010 and 2011.

In its latest successful mediation effort, Oman secured the release of Mojtaba Atarodi, an Iranian scientist held by the U.S. since late 2011 on charges of violating U.S. sanctions in April 2013.
