Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has issued amnesty for 80 prisoners charged with security-related issues including some people who had been arrested during 2009 presidential election protests, ISNA news agency reported citing the Spokesman of the Iran's Judiciary, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i.

Mohseni-Eje'i made the remarks during a press conference in Tehran, the report said.

Ejei went on to say that in the future more prisoners charged with security-related issues will be released.

He went on to note that, some prisoners who were arrested on charges related to 2009 presidential election protests, have been pardoned three times during the last three years.

On September 18, Iranian media outlets informed that at least 11 political prisoners, among them prominent human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh have been released.

Iran's unexpected release is being seen as the first tangible sign of change in the country since the July election of Hassan Rouhani as president.

Rouhani, who was inaugurated on August 4, campaigned on a platform of moderation and promised to release political prisoners as well as give Iranians more rights.

The Journalsit Mahsa Amrabadi, reformist politician and founding member of the reformist party Mojahedin of the Islamic Revolution Organization Feyzollah Arabsorkhi, reformist diplomat and former deputy FM Mohsen Aminzadeh and former reformist MP Mir Taher Mousavi were among the released prisoners.

It should be recalled that, Country's opposition leaders Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi are currently under home arrest in Iran, after the unrests and protests of the 2009 presidential elections in Iran.
