Iranian airline, Asseman, is planning to launch flights to North America and Canada, the Fars News Agency quoted the airline's managing director Abbas Rahmatian as saying.

Considering the airline carried President Hassan Rouhani to the United Nations meeting, we were requested to expand flights to North America and Canada, he added.

The airline has got the capability to overhaul airplanes he said, adding it operates 33 planes.

Earlier this month, Managing Director of Iran's Airtour Airline, Sirous Baheri, said on September 1 that over 60 per cent of Iran's total 220 planes are grounded due to technical and logistic issues. The fleet is an average 22 years old, the ISNA News Agency reported.

"Iran's airlines are facing great losses due to the low price of domestic flight tickets. They are currently having difficulties competing with foreign airlines.

"Not having connections with the manufacturers is one of the main problems that made it difficult for them to repair their fleet," Baheri stated.

In September, the Civil Aviation Organisation of Iran announced that six new airlines have recently received permission to start operating.

CAO director Hamidreza Pahlavani said permissions have been issued within the past month, according to the Mehr News Agency.

Earlier this month, Pahlavani said the organisation will ease ticket prices in a bid to encourage domestic airlines to improve services. He added the decision will take effect in the next four months.

In May, Pahlavani announced that two new Iranian airlines will start operations in the current Iranian calendar year which began on March 21.
