IAEA: Bushehr plant unscathed by quake

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant was not damaged by an earthquake in the country's southern city of Borazjan, Press TV reported.

Describing information provided by Iran about Bushehr nuclear power plant as satisfactory, the IAEA said on Saturday no further information was needed with regards to the plant's situation.

Behrouz Kamalvandi, the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), said on Friday that the Bushehr power plant was operating as before despite a recent quake in Borazjan.

At least seven people were killed and nearly 200 others were injured when an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale rattled Borazjan in Bushehr Province on November 28.

Kamalvandi stressed that the Bushehr facility is among the world's safest nuclear plants and can withstand strong quakes.

Iran and the Russian contractor of the project Atomstroyexport have assured the international community that the facility is fully compliant with high-level safety standards and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
