World countries must try to stop hostilities in Syria, and make sure terrorist groups would exit the country, Iranian president Hassan Rouhani said in Davos, Press TV reported on Jan. 23.

Iranian president expressed regret about presence of various terrorist groups in Syria, that have flown into the country from all over the region, and even from other continents.

Rouhani, answering the question on Syria, said that free elections is the only way of resolving the ongoing crisis in the country.

Iran's president noted that Iran continues to send humanitarian help to Syria, including food and medicine, adding that despite this Syria is experiencing "a big catastrophe".

During the conflict in Syria which began in March 2011, more than 115,000 people were killed in the country and over 4.2 million became refugees in Syrian territory and two million fled to neighbouring countries.

Iran is a close ally of the Syrian government and it always shows its support for the regime of Syrian President Bashar al Assad.

On Jan. 20, Ban Ki-moon withdrew the invitation from Iran to participate in the conference on Syria, after Tehran declared it does not support the June 2012 political transition deal that is the basis for the talks.

The Geneva 2 peace conference is a proposed UN backed international conference which started in Geneva on Jan. 22 with the aim of ending the Syrian civil war.
