Iran, Sextet finalize framework for comprehensive nuclear talks

Iran's top nuclear negotiator says Tehran and the Sextet of world powers have finalized a framework for comprehensive talks to reach a final agreement, Press TV reported.

Iran Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araqchi announced the deal on Wednesday night.

Araqchi stated that the new round of nuclear talks that started in the Austrian capital on Tuesday was held in a positive atmosphere.

Tehran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany will hold a new round of negotiations from March 17 to 20 in Vienna, he added.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, are scheduled to hold a joint press conference on Thursday.

The latest round of talks was held to hammer out a final agreement on Iran's nuclear energy program.

The discussions were the first round of high-level negotiations between Tehran and the six world powers after the two sides arrived at a landmark interim deal in the Swiss city of Geneva on November 24, 2013.

Under the deal, the six countries undertook to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during a six-month period. It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions will be imposed on Iran within the same timeframe.

The agreement, dubbed the Geneva Joint Plan of Action, went into effect on January 20.
