Deputy FM: Assisting Syrian people a priority for Iran

Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the comment Sunday night in a meeting with Belgian governmentˈs special envoy on Syrian affairs Mark Otte, who is visiting Iran along with that countryˈs foreign minister and deputy prime minister, IRNA reported.

The two sides in the meeting exchanged viewpoints on various aspects of the Syrian crisis and ways for assisting the Syrian nation.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister briefed the Belgian delegation on the volume of the Iranian food and medical humanitarian aids to the Syrian nation ever since the beginning of the crisis, side by side with the contributions of some European countries, like Switzerland, to the people in need in various parts of that country.

Amir-Abdollahian also announced Tehranˈs readiness for the establishment of a trilateral cooperation among Iran, Syria and Belgium.

The Belgian governmentˈs special envoy on Syria, too, reiterated that the deteriorating living conditions of the Syrian nation and the methods for handing out the humanitarian aids to the people in need there are the major concerns of the Belgian people and their political officials.

Mark Otte meanwhile announced readiness that through cooperation between the two countriesˈ officials and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the real living conditions of the Syrian people in various parts of that country would be studied on the spot and the required mechanisms for helping them in collaboration with the Iranian and Syrian Red Crescent Societies and the Red Cross Societies of the interested European countries would be established.

The two sides meanwhile focused on the issue of terrorism, the presence of the European terrorists in Syria, and the threats posed against the world peace and security due to the expansion of terrorism and extremism around the globe.

They meanwhile reached agreement to keep on consultations aimed at seeking a peaceful and political solution for the Syrian crisis and campaign against terrorism in that country.

Syriaˈs uprising began with largely peaceful protests in March 2011 before turning into a civil war that has killed more than 140,000 people. The conflict has also forced 2.5 million to flee the country, left millions more in desperate need of aid and caused immense suffering across the nation.

On Saturday, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution demanding immediate access everywhere in Syria for humanitarian aid. The resolution, which marked a rare instance of unity on the Security Council, doesnˈt threaten sanctions but it does express the councilˈs intention to take ˈfurther stepsˈ if the resolution isnˈt implemented.

Syriaˈs Foreign Ministry on Sunday welcomed the resolution, voiced its readiness to cooperate but said that top priority must be respecting national sovereignty. It also said that to address the humanitarian crisis demanding dealing with ˈforeign-backed terrorism.ˈ

Damascus says the crisis in the country is caused by an international conspiracy against Syria.
